  • Henry Walsh brings extensive global expertise with over two decades of leadership and hands-on experience in commodity trading, portfolio management, and risk management across diverse markets. Currently, he is the Founder and Managing Director of Great Southern Cross Commodities, focusing on restructuring, risk management, commodity trading, and capital solutions. Notably, he advised Mercon Coffee on its $363 million Chapter 11 restructuring and the sale of its US and Vietnam businesses, alongside Rothschild & Co.

    Henry previously served as Chief Investment Officer and Head of Trading at Engelhart Financial Trading, where he oversaw global trading operations across macro commodities, equities, foreign exchange, and financial instruments. At BTG Pactual, he managed significant proprietary trading portfolios in coffee and cotton, building robust global research and physical trading capabilities.

    His extensive experience also includes leadership roles at NAB, Noble Group, and Macquarie Bank, where he oversaw proprietary and client-driven trading portfolios across agriculture, energy, soft commodities, base and precious metals, and FX markets. Henry co-founded and led global trading desks, managing extensive operations throughout Asia-Pacific, EMEA, and the Americas.

    Henry's strategic approach and global market insight have consistently enabled successful navigation of complex commodity market environments, driving profitability, innovation, and sustainable business growth.

  • John Watson has over 30 years of extensive experience in global commodity markets, having successfully established, developed, and led commodity trading businesses for prominent financial institutions including JP Morgan, Macquarie, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), and National Australia Bank (NAB). Currently, John serves as a Senior Advisor at Great Southern Cross Commodities, specializing in commodity derivatives, risk management, capital raising, and asset management.

    Prior to this, John held significant roles such as Global Head of Commodity Trading at NAB, where he managed comprehensive commodity trading operations. As an Executive Director at JPMorgan Chase in London, he contributed significantly to the commodities division. His earlier career included senior trading roles at Commonwealth Bank and Macquarie Bank, focusing on agricultural, soft commodities, and derivatives trading.

    Throughout his distinguished career, John has developed deep expertise in advanced trading systems and sophisticated risk management practices, consistently driving operational excellence, profitability, and robust risk mitigation strategies across global markets.

  • Darren brings over 20 years of extensive global experience in structured commodity finance, having held senior leadership roles at Macquarie Group across both the US and APAC regions. Throughout his career, Darren successfully originated, structured, syndicated, and managed complex financing transactions spanning agriculture, energy, renewables, and resources. Notably, he co-founded Macquarie’s Structured Commodity Finance business in the US, driving significant growth through strategic hires and the development of innovative commodity financing structures.

    Darren has also led comprehensive reviews of global lending portfolios and complex physical commodity businesses, establishing a high-performing Line 1 risk team that consistently delivered improved commercial outcomes through the development of a centre of excellence for advice on ESR-related transactions, insurance, and equity investments, and played a key role in leading successful responses to APRA commodity-related reviews.

    In addition, Darren has served as an advisor to early-stage and growth companies in the commodities sector, providing expertise in capital solutions, risk management, and governance. He has also held non-executive director roles on the boards of two early-stage companies.

    Currently, Darren serves as a Senior Advisor at Great Southern Cross Commodities, where he provides strategic guidance in capital solutions, governance frameworks, and commodity risk management practices.

  • Asher is a Commodity Analyst is our Commodity Analyst based in Sydney. His focus area is the Soft Agricultural Market. He is building comprehensive supply and demand models and simultaneously developing our backend and frontend infrastructure to enhance GSX's research capabilities.

    Asher brings extensive financial markets experience from his internships with ANZ Global Markets, where he was in the eFICC team and Macquarie Group, where he was an intern on the Money Market Desk and Liquidity Risk team. He further honed his skills in financial services during his graduate role at Australian Super.

    Academically, Asher is studying a Master of Quantitative Finance at University of Technology Sydney, a Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Honours) in Chemistry from the University of Sydney, and dual degrees in Science and Mathematics from the University of Newcastle.

    His international exposure includes participation in the Future Chemist International Summer Camp at the University of Science and Technology of China (2018) and being a Ma & Morley Scholar (2021) which involved a tour to China and a visit to Alibaba Headquarters.

    Committed to leadership and disciplined teamwork, Asher also serves part-time in the Australian Army Reserve. He combines quantitative expertise, diverse industry experience, and strategic insight into commodities analysis and financial markets.
